Strelitzia

Strelitzia are also known as Bird of Paradise flowers, because of their resemblance to the crane or Bird of Paradise. They are native to South Africa, and can grow up to 2 metres in height.
Originally, the name was created in honour of Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the wife of English King George III.
In the wild the plant can reach up to 4 metres tall in ideal conditions. The flowers are produced in a horizontal inflorescence emerging from a stout spathe. They are pollinated by sunbirds, which use the spathe as a perch when visiting the flowers; the weight of the bird on the spathe opens it to release the pollen on the bird’s feet, which is then deposited on the next flower it visits.
Strelitzia require a lot of light; the plant, however, does not like direct, hot sunlight. Under normal humidity, the plant retains its beautiful green foliage.
